Because many of the members of our cabana club were seniors, the outdoor pool at our Chicago high-rise apartment building was normally kept at 80 degrees, like a good hot bath. But on one Memorial Day opening, the water couldn't muster more than a tepid 68 to 72 degrees.

The seniors balked.

Two weeks of complaints brought on a six-week parade of remedies for the problem based on "expert advice."

The expert advice of our pool contractor was to order an out-of-state bundle of new tubing--the existing tubing being corroded and clearly unserviceable. The expert advice of an engineer called for a new burner, which in turn required us to borrow a station wagon and hire two men just to heft the beastly thing. The expert advice of our maintenance supervisor, who for the past 10 years had become familiar with the various mood strings of the pool, was unavailable, as he had just left us--a lukewarm pool in his wake. …
