RIPENING GRAPES HANG HEAVY on the vines this month in the Rogue River Valley. You can taste of the fruit of the vine at five area wineries that invite visitors to sample their varietal wines. Two wineries are in Ashland, home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Valley View Winery has a tasting room in historic Jacksonville, and a vineyard in the scenic Applegate Valley. Two other wineries are at Cave Junction, near Oregon Caves National Monument.

Ashland Vineyards & Winery, 2775 E. Main St., Ashland; (503) 488-0088. In the tasting room, sample wines including a dry Riesling and a full-bodied Chardonnay. Open 11 to 5 Tuesdays through Sundays (call for tours).

Weisinger's of Ashland, 3150 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland; (800) 551-9463. There's a chalet-style tasting room. Try the dry Gewurztraminer and the Petite Pompadour, a blend of French Bordeaux varieties. Open 10 to 6 daily through September, 11 to 5 October through May.
