We've put this year's newest pointe shoes and slippers under the microscope.


1. PEUCO ULTIMA BY GAMBA A "one quarter" pre-pointe shoe constructed without a shank to help beginners develop a feel for pointework; for use at the barre only.

2. PRO 2007 BY GRISHKO Virtually the same as Grishko's original 2007, except it boasts "top secret" sound-deadening materials beneath the box.

3. RUSSIAN POINTE BY BLOCH Designed to be extra quiet and has a shorter vamp than most traditional Russian V-vamp shoes.

4-. BALANCE BV BLOCH Built with a wider box to give toes more room and with a wider platform for easier balance. Features elastic binding; also features low-cut sides, a thin outsole and a heel seam cushion. The Balance European (also new; not pictured] resembles the Balance, but has a tapered box.
