ON MAY 9 AND 10 THE CENtury Plaza Hotel and Tower in Los Angeles opened its doors to 60 inner-city Los Angeles high school students. These 50 juniors and 10 seniors from Belmont and Fremont High Schools were invited to participate in the hotel's second annual job-shadowing program.

During the onsite orientation, hotel staff manned 16 stations to explain the different departments-and small groups of students rotated through at 15-minute intervals. Students walked away from each station with five Fast Facts-bullet points with key information about each operating area.

Different from the first year, 10 seniors who had participated in the pilot program the year before were selected to attend this year as mentors. Their job was to help the younger students become familiar with the physical property and to facilitate the smooth movement of students from one part of the training to the next.

Another change in the program this year, the hotel staff provided students with an orientation booklet. The idea came from the senior-class mentors. …
