* Former Transport secretary Stephen Byers apologised in Parliament on February 1 for a 'factually inaccurate' statement to MPs about Railtrack. The North Tyneside MP was cleared by the Commons standards committee of lying to the transport committee in 2001.

* Dame Kelly Holmes has been named as the first National School Sport Champion as part of the government's drive to get more children to participate in physical education and school sport. The double Olympic champion will visit schools and sports events across the country.

* More than 100 staff are leaving Flintshire Council as part of a £6m costsaving plan prompted by a financial crisis in the housing department. They will leave on redundancy terms or early retirement as part of a reorganisation aimed at saving more than £2m.
