Planning Changes Give Councils Bigger Role

Local authorities are to work more closely with developers to speed up complex planning applications.

Twenty-one councils will pilot planning delivery agreements in England with the aim of making sure decisions are reached within an agreed time and, where they receive the go-ahead, that the developments come up to standard.

Housing and planning minister Yvette Cooper said councils had improved the way they handle applications but larger proposals still often took too long to sort out.

'Planning delivery agreements will help to make the planning system more efficient so that community groups and developers alike know what the timetable is and where they stand,' she added.

The proposals covered by the pilots include a major residential scheme in Birmingham and a new Tesco supermarket in the Wyre Forest, Worcestershire. …
