Government figures for the Child Support Agency indicate that, at the current rate, it would take until 2064 to clear the backlog of 'new scheme' cases built up over the past three years, the Liberal Democrats have claimed. Figures released by the Department for Work and Pensions also show that new scheme cases - applications made since the CSA introduced a new formula for maintenance payments in 2003 - wait an average of 476 days before they are processed, LibDem DWP spokesman David Laws said.

Water regulator Ofwat has calculated that more low-income metered households who need to use large quantities of water have received help with their bills this year. According to the watchdog's latest figures, around 9,000 families in England and Wales received assistance under the Vulnerable Groups Scheme, which limits high-volume, low-income users to just the average water bill for their region. That represents an increase of 20% on the previous year, although Ofwat warned that overall take-up of the scheme was still low.

The London Borough of Lambeth has made significant progress and the close monitoring arrangements imposed by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister are no longer needed. The council was recently judged to be a 'two star' performer under the Comprehensive Performance Assessment. ODPM minister Jim Fitzpatrick congratulated the council on its achievement.
