Pharmacist Enlists Technology for Patient Care

An Arizona pharmacist has married his computer and pharmacy management expertise to produce a patient education video and major medical billing software to advance the search for pharmaceutical care reimbursement.

Tools for Pharmaceutical Care is Chuck Calvano's electronic entry into the area of disease state management and billing software. His Phoenix-based company, Hybrid Technologies, has produced a CD-ROM video containing patient education modules covering asthma, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension based on drug therapy protocols. He's also developed userfriendly software that electronically bills major medical insurance plans for cognitive services.

"There's a whole lot of talk about being paid for cognitive services, but it's not really happening, certainly not at the rate we need to get pharmacists involved and paid," said Calvano, who is also a pharmacy manager with Target Stores. "I've created a package that combines billing that really works and a CD-ROM that saves pharmacists the repetitive tasks, such as describing how to inject insulin."

The interactive video is not designed to take the place of the pharmacist, Calvano said. It's more a tool to save time, boost compliance with therapy, and support reimbursement for the service. "The CD-ROM supports the pharmacist; it doesn't try to be the pharmacist," he said. "It doesn't replace the personal counseling that should occur between the pharmacist and the patient. …
