Really want to see how vulnerable your property is to crime? The first step is to think like a criminal, according to Sal DePasquale, regional security manager for Mentor Associates in Atlanta.

"Criminals are not stupid," says DePasquale. "They will assess your building to see how easy it is to get in and to get goods out. If it It is too hard, they will look elsewhere."

Based on DePasquale"s experience, here's what is probably going through the mind of the criminal even now casing your building:

Does the security guard's desk give a clear view of all main entrances?

Does the guard verify visitors' appointments?

Does the guard go on patrol? Are those patrols predictable?

How do people go in and out of the building? Do they show iden tification? How does the security guard relate to people (easygoing or strict)? Can I walk into the building unchallenged?

Do employees carry packages out of the building without being questioned? …
