Applications Sought for 2006 NCEA Social Justice Education Grants

Applications will be accepted through April 30, 2006, for NCEA social justice education grants. The grants are intended to encourage the integration of Catholic social teaching into the curriculum, foster the creativity and professional development of teachers and disseminate effective approaches to other Catholic educators.

The theme this year is Option for the Poor and Vulnerable. The grant proposal must take one or more aspects of the theme and develop a series of cross-cultural lessons related to it. In social studies, for example, the teacher may have the students do research on the number of homeless in their city or town, why they might be homeless and what society can do to change this situation. In science, students may discover how scientific advances may help the poor but also may create even more poor people. In literature, students may read stories about people who have given their lives to alleviate the sufferings of the poor. …
