Geoff Hoon, the Leader of the House, has begun talks aimed at reducing the parliamentary summer recess amid public concern that MPS' 11-week holiday is too long. Hoon has asked the Trades Union Congress to bring forward 'tis autumn conference to help reduce the break.

The Ministry of Defence has announced the short list to build Royal Navy support ships but only one contender, Amec, uses British dockyards. Two US firms, Halliburton subsidiary KBR and Raytheon Systems, complete the list.

The Great Western Hospital in Swindon has earned £1.2m in parking fees since it opened three years ago, it was revealed this week. Swindon Borough Council, which runs the car park for the hospital, said the charges were to deter people parking at the site and travelling into town, as well as for revenue.
