INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS DIG INTO DATA NEH joins 15 international organizations to fund the newest round of the Digging into Data Challenge awards. Approximately $9.2 million will go to 14 collaborative team projects doing research in musicology, linguistics, economics, political science, and history.

One of the projects receiving NEH support will study folklore traditions documented across several national databases. Folklore scholars and computer scientists from three institutions-Meertens Institute in the Netherlands, University of Rostock in Germany, and UCLA-will collaborate to develop techniques to analyze a wealth of data on the subject.

Eleven countries are sponsoring the Digging into Data Challenge, under the auspices of T-AR the Trans-Atlantic Platform for the Social Sciences and the Humanities. Participants include Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, United Kingdom, and the United States. Of the total amount awarded, NEH is contributing $914,930 to support American scholars on five of the projects. …
