Nearly a week has passed, and the news still doesn't seem quite real: Bill O'Reilly out at Fox News. 21st Century Fox had hunkered down for so long in the wake of The New York Times story about the anchor's misconduct that it was fair to presume the company's board was resolute about keeping the channel's main attraction in place for eternity, controversy be damned. It was as if he was too big to fail ... or maybe too Bill to fail.

But O'Reilly finally toppled, though it's unclear at this juncture just why. The advertiser boycott was surely a factor. Yet another woman came forward to allege his sexual harassment. And then there are the hidden contents of the investigation conducted by the law firm the parent company hired, potentially stocked with enough bombshells that may never see the light of day but were reason enough to sway the Murdochs that it was time for O'Reilly to go.

Therein lies what may be an even bigger mystery than what that investigation unearthed: How does Rupert Murdoch feel about the situation, and what did his sons have to say on the matter? …
