1940-2017 The manager-agent-producer was a maverick - and a mentor

Producer Howard Rosenman remembers Sandy Gallin, manager, agent and producer, whose clients included Dolly Parton, Michael Jackson and Cher Gallin died of cancer April 21.

I met Sandy Gallin in the autumn of 1967 at a brunch at P. J. Clarke's in New York City. Barry Diller invited me to meet his best friends, David Geffen, Ellen Krass and Sandy. I found out that Sandy also hailed from the Five Towns on Long Island. So here was a guy who was so comfortable in his own skin, an unabashed gay man, who was very upfront about his pride in being out. He was hilariously funny and had an infectious joy about life. Years later, at a low point in my career, David Geffen suggested generously that I work for Sandy co-running his and Dolly Parton's company Sandollar. Sandy gave Carol Baum and myself free rein, and we made a lot of movies: "Father of the Bride," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Gross Anatomy""Straight Talk," "A Stranger Among Us," "Shining Through," "True Identity," "Tidy Endings" (which also won many awards) and the Oscar and Peabody award-winning "Common Threads: Stories From the Quilt. …
