Preventive Medicine Co-Pays Could Be Eliminated

The House is considering a bill that would end the practice of charging veterans copayments for VA preventive medications. VFW supports H.R. 1100 - the Veterans Preventive Health Coverage Fairness Act.

"The only people in the United States forced to pay for preventive medicine are veterans and the uninsured," said Carlos Fuentes, director of VFW's National Legislative Service. "There is no just reason why veterans should pay for this form of health care when the law mandates it as nocost for everyone else in the nation."

Specifically, the bill:

* Adds preventive medications and services to the list of no-fee treatments VA covers.

* Eliminates veterans co-pays for preventive health medications and services.

* Aligns prescription copayment standards for veterans with private industry and militaryretiree standards.

Examples of preventive medications are aspirin for promoting healthy hearts, vitamin D to guard against bone fractures, breast cancer prevention drugs and folic acid for pregnant women to guard against birth defects. …
