What a week it was for Hulu. The long-anticipated launch of its virtual MVPD service was announced at its annual NewFronts presentation, marking a transformative moment for a company previously defined as running a distant third in a subscription VOD category dominated by Netflix and Amazon.

Part of what plagued Hulu in recent years was the absence of the kind of breakout original series its rivals seemed to spawn with relative ease. And yet the emergence in recent weeks of its first truly watercooler-worthy drama series, "The Handmaid's Tale," seems to have finally ended that dry spell.

A promising new product and a bona fide hit series feel like a miracle when you consider how far Hulu has come. Just seven years ago this joint venture was being derided as "Clown Co." and the internecine squabbling of owners like Fox and Disney completely overshadowed any sense of potential.
