Telepics Evolve from MOWs to Must-See TV

for years, HBO has dominated the Emmys’ TV movie category, and once again the premium cabler has a pair of powerhouse contenders in the Robert De Niro/Michelle Pfeiffer starrer “The Wizard of Lies” about Bernie Madoff, and the Oprah Winfrey passion project “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” based on the book about the African-American woman whose cells are used in breakthrough research.

But beyond those heavy-hitters lie a surprising range of contenders each taking hope from last year’s upset victory of BBC production “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” over HBO’s “All the Way” and “Confirmation.”

Of course, “Sherlock” itself is back with the installment “The Lying Detective,” once again with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the pivotal roles. And another British series, the sci-fi anthology “Black Mirror,” enters the race for the first time thanks to new U.S. backer Netflix. …
