Spectre has raced to $293m worldwide factoring in the muscular international performance and the North American debut was the second highest in the franchise behind $88.4m set by Skyfall in 2012.

Fox's The Martian has neared $200m and stands at $196.8m in third place after six sessions.

Three awards contenders arrived at the weekend led by Open Road Films' acclaimed Spotlight on $295,009 from five theatres at number 23. Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams and Liev Schreiber lead the ensemble.

Fox Searchlight opened Brooklyn starring Saoirse Ronan at number 30 on $187,281 while Bleecker Street debuted Trumbo with Bryan Cranston at number 36 on $74,177 from five.

Overall box office for the top 12 amounted to $151.4m and climbed 142% against last weekend and gained 3.1% on the comparable period in 2014 when Big Hero 6 opened at number one on $56.2m.

This weekend's wide releases are Chilean mine disaster drama The 33 through Warner Bros and comedy Love The Coopers via CBS Films. …
