The foods we should not be eating are fighting for our attention. Here are some tips from the Nutrition Action Healthletter for ways to resist junk food's appeal.

Don't get too hungry. When you feel famished, your belly tells your brain to be on the lookout for any food cues you see, says University of Michigan psychologist Ashley Gearhardt. Skip the crash diets, too, she says. Focus on the quality of the food you eat.

Do not drink your calories. Many studies have found that sugary drinks lead to weight gain. For example, people who drink a 150-calorie glass of cola with lunch were found to eat about the same as people who drink either water or a no-calorie drink.

Focus on better foods. Identify foods you enjoy that do not cause an internal struggle such as "I'm only going to have a few bites but oh, I want more. …
