Having earned multiple awards for films like "Beyond the Lights" (2014), "The Secret Life of Bees" (2008) and "Love & Basketball" (2001), the 48-year-old director is also a co-creator of the Fox television series "Shots Fired." She's the first African-American woman to direct a Marvel movie.

Caro broke through in 2003 at age 36 with the BAFTA Award winner "Whale Rider." She's followed that with an eclectic mix of acclaimed films including a legal drama about sexual harassment ("North Country," starring Charlize Theron), a sports biopic about an inspirational track coach ("McFarland, USA") and a fact-based WWII drama about a woman who rescued Polish Jews from the Nazis ("The Zookeeper's Wife").
