New Voices Break through in Comedy Field

The comedy field this year might as well be dubbed Rise of the Auteurs. Nominations for Donald Glover, Pamela Adlon, Zach Galifianakis and Aziz Ansari reflect a sea change in the definition of what constitutes a halfhour comedy.

The arrival of Glover's FX series "Atlanta" last fall hit the creative community like a ton of bricks. Its very specific look at the lives of African-American men offered a window into our culture that resonated across racial and gender lines. "Atlanta" competing against ABC's "Black-ish" and "Modern Family" and HBO's "Silicon Valley" illustrates the broad palette in the half-hour form.

Ansari's Netflix comedy "Master of None" was even more autobiographical in its second season. Adlon added a female perspective to the "here is my life" genre with FX's "Better Things," which earned her a lead comedy actress berth. …
