The star-studded cast (Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hank Azaria) and the hot-button political story (Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme) made HBO's "The Wizard of Lies" a no-brainer for an Emmy nom. in the category this year. It's prime awards bait: It landed four noms overall.

PBS' "Sherlock: The Lying Detective" was a shoo-in as well, given that it was the follow-up to 2016's winner, "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride." But the remaining three spots were much more contested: With stiff competition across genres and networks, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" (HBO), "Black Mirror: San Junipero" (Netflix), and "Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love" (NBC) ultimately made it onto the ballot.
