Better Call Saul

Executive producers Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould tried to select episodes that would best showcase all creative elements of their "Breaking Bad" prequel in the same scenes. "We submitted episode five ['Chicanery'], our courtroom episode, because it was a great piece to show offthe ability of our cast to do about 30 or 40 pages of dialogue," Gould says. "And since episodes five and six are linked, we went that way to further show offediting, writing and all of those things, because it is all organic."

The Crown

Netflix's royal period drama starts in 1947 when Prince Philip gives up his titles to marry Princess Elizabeth. But then the series jumps forward in time to the early 1950s to explore King George VI's death and Elizabeth's ascension. The episodes submitted for Emmy consideration showcased the best of all time periods, starting with the premiere, "Wolferton Splash," as well as the coronation episode, "Smoke and Mirrors," and ultimately the finale, "Gloriana." This gives Academy voters a sense of just how expansive the series was in its freshman season.

The Handmaid's Tale

When choosing which episodes to submit, Bruce Miller knew he had to highlight the pilot ["Offred"], which laid the groundwork for the whole world of his dystopian drama, based on Margaret Atwood's novel. "This is one of my favorite books, and I didn't want to ruin it," Miller says. …
