It's been three years since Kelsea Ballerini became the new young female face of country music with "Love Me Like You Mean It," the first of three consecutive No. 1 singles in the format. Her second album of pop-leaning country, "Unapologetically" (due Nov. 3 from Black River), finds the 23-year-old ready for matrimony but still with some bumps in the road to sing about.

When you made your first album, you said you'd just been through a "gnarly" breakup. Any difficulty getting in touch with that vibe again, now that you're engaged?

With the first one, we mainly put a better vocal on the demos that we'd made before we had a record deal and turned it into the album. So this one is the first truly intentional album I've made. I was like, man, I just want to make a chronological story of my life the last two and a half years. …
