Roshelle Pavlin always wanted to make a difference in the world, although it took her a while to figure out the best way to make her mark.

She began her career as a middle school math and science teacher, discovered HR through a summer job, and then entered the FBI Academy with hopes of becoming a special agent.

She was devastated when she had to drop out of FBI training due to a knee injury.

Eighteen years after leaving the academy, Pavlin is having an impact as president-elect of the Northwest Human Resource Management Association, an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and as past director and SHRM Foundation director with the Washington State SHRM Council.

"It took a little bit of time to realize that my career in HR and my HR-related volunteer work does make a difference," she says. "I'm doing my part to provide genuine and supportive work environments to employees and to help other HR professionals succeed."

She also serves as the SHRM Membership Advisory Council Pacific West Region representative, providing input from that region's state councils to the SHRM Board of Directors. …
