James R. Metzler, ChM, 69 years old, May 19, 2017, in Sylvania, Ohio. He was born June 20, 1947, in Worcester, Mass., was adopted as an infant, and was raised in foster care until age 18. He was a boy chorister at All Saints Episcopal Church in Worcester and had his first organ lessons on the IV/122 AeolianSkinner there. He received the BMus degree at Westminster Choir College and the MMus degree from Наш School of Music. Metzler also completed some doctoral work in organ and musicology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His organ teachers included Henry Hokans, Robert Carwithen, Alec Wyton (improvisation), John Holtz, Marilyn Mason, and Martin Neary, the latter at Winchester Cathedral. Additional studies were at the Royal School of Church Music in Croydon, England.

Metzler was organist-choirmaster of Trinity Episcopal Church, Toledo, Ohio, from 1972 to 1996; Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Little Rock, Ark., where he was appointed canon of music, 1996 to 2006; he was subsequently minister of music for First (Park) Congregational Church, UCC, Grand Rapids, Mich., 2006-2013. He was a music faculty member at Mitchell College, New London, Conn.; the University of Toledo, Ohio; and Grand Valley State University, Allendale, Mich. …
