The French Evangelical Church (Presbyterian) on West 16th St. in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City was founded in 1846 by Belgianborn Antoine Frederick Twyeffort. With the growth of his flock, this unusual building, built in 1835, was purchased and remodeled in 1885. In a recent and controversial real estate development deal, the church sold the neighboring asylum structure, and a residential tower was built next to and above the church. The preservation of the church's interior was to include the removal of dents from the facade pipes from the defunct 1930 Kilgen organ, which had reached a point of complete mechanical failure. …
