Victoria de Lilia's 2011 book Nurtured, by Nature: The Children's Garden is a good source for anyone seeking a general compilation of gardening activities for young children; it provides tools to develop an age-appropriate outdoor exploration space in a school setting. While the majority of the activities presented are intended for 3- to 6-year-olds, many could easily be adapted and extended for Elementary-age children.

The author's interest in Gaia philosophy is prevalent throughout the book and may be off-putting to some readers. Despite that, Nurtured by Nature is a pragmatic manual for any educator who wishes to create or reimagine a child-friendly natural area. De Lilla includes inspiring descriptions and observational anecdotes of her own Montessori school's garden, though photographs would have been a helpful addition to clarify some of the components. …
