This month we asked our Lower Elementary students to write about a time they were brave. One child wrote, "When it was bedtime I was scared. I was scared that somebody would brake [sic] into the house. But then I kept up my bravery and I slept like a rock."

I was helping a 5-year-old with his Asia map labels. While writing the word Thailand, he said to me, "Ms. Erin, you should be careful in Thailand."

Me: "Really? Why?"

Student: "Well, you and your husband go for a romantic dinner and, BOOM, an elephant crushes your house!"

My 5-year-old son had worn down his only pair of sneakers and was in desperate need of replacements. I finally got around to buying him a new pair, and when I got home, I was eager to show him.

"Mama got you something," I said, as I gave him the box. He excitedly yanked a sneaker out and tossed it across the room.
