Madeleine J. Justus, of Bellevue, WA, died May 10, 2016, at the age of 99. Born in 1916, in Transylvania, she attended a Montessori laboratory school while at the University of Cluj, in Romania, and later took her Montessori training in Austria. In 1937, she met Dr. Montessori at the International Congress in Zurich, Switzerland. During World War II, in Europe, she organized a Montessori school for war orphans, providing them education and also sharing her food rations with them. In 1948, having survived two world wars and the Holocaust, she emigrated from Europe to New York and then, 2 years later, to Seattle, WA. In 1951, she founded Montessori Academy at Spring Valley, in Seattle, the first Montessori program in the Pacific Northwest (it is now in Federal Way, WA). In 1960, she founded the Montessori Institute for Teacher Education at Spring Valley, also in Federal Way. She was a founding member and served as a board member of MACTE (Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education), PNMA (Pacific Northwest Montessori Association), and WFIS (Washington Federation of Independent Schools). …
