A 5-year-old was reading a beginning reader to me. One sentence, "Doc and Nan hopped on the bus," was accompanied by an old cartoon picture of a man in a white coat, who clearly looked like a doctor, and a woman with a white dress and hat, who clearly looked like a nurse. When I asked the student what she thought Doc and Nan did for work, she pointed to the woman and said, "Nan is a doctor."

I asked, "What about Doc?"

"Oh, he's her boyfriend carrying her stuff."
