Cost study halts Wales bid for games

Wales has decided against bidding to host the Commonwealth Games 2026 after a study found it would be too expensive. Economy and infrastructure secretary Ken Skates said a bid would cost around £1.32bn-£1.54bn and involve a "huge additional commitment" from the Welsh government over three terms.

FUNDING

Irish cross-border funds threshold cut

The approval of crossborder European funding deals between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is being speeded up. Only projects with expenditure over £5m will now require approval from the Department of Finance, up from £2m. Northern Ireland finance minister Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said this was in line with his pledge to maximise access to the two programmes that cross the north/south divide, EU Peace IV and Interrag VA, and would speed up approval by around three weeks.
