Doctor need neglected

* What a pity the coalition government didn't think about doctor recruitment in 2010, and Labour before that (Government pledges 1,500 more doctors for NHS, http://bit.ly/2vYcBM8).

Why aren't the senior civil servants bringing these matters before ministers at an early stage? Th eir job is to look strategically but they are failing.

To help students from poorer backgrounds become doctors - bearing in mind the length of the courses - there needs to be a means tested grant system to enable them to attend university. The same goes for training places for nurses.

BBC boost to the north takes time

* The Centre for Cities says the BBC's move to Manchester did little to boost the area (BBC's Manchester move "had little economic benefit", http://bit.ly/2wa2TGg). However, in the long run, it will have a larger impact.

I suspect much of the Brexit vote was due to long-term centralisation in London and the South East that disenfranchised the North. …
