Wellbeing to Be a Local Priority

The forthcoming Programme for Government from the Northern Ireland Executive will place wellbeing at the heart of local decision making and policy, deputy fi rst minister Martin McGuinness has said.

Speaking at the Northern Ireland Local Government Association conference, McGuinness said the executive would work with local government, communities and society on a programme that was aff ordable and, above all, would make "a positive diff erence".

This was, he said, a commitment to "work across government and in partnership with wider society to deliver on a shared vision of improved wellbeing for all, achieved through a fi rm focus on tackling disadvantage and driving economic growth".

He added that a consultation would inform the executive's budget.

At the same event, communities minister Paul Givan said that "local government has a vital role to play in shaping the future of Northern Ireland".

"Sometimes it's really helpful to be able to say, 'I've looked at the register and you may think I own it but I don't'," he added. …
