Strand Releasing to Distribute Lucrecia Martel's 'Zama' in North America

Distributor reunites with director Lucrecia Martel after The Headless Woman.

Lucrecia Martel’s acclaimed period drama Zama has found its North American home and will open theatrically through Strand Releasing in early 2018.

Strand, which distributed Martel’s 2008 mystery The Headless Woman, acquired rights from The Match Factory in the run-up to the film’s US debut at the New York Film Festival. The film premiered in Venice and screened in Toronto.

Zama stars Daniel Gimenez Cacho as an officer in a remote South American colony in the late 18th century awaiting transfer. As he counts down the days to the hoped-for move, the officer succumbs to lust and paranoia and becomes immersed in petty politics.

Martel directed from her adaptation of Antonio di Benedetto’s 1956 Argentinean novel. …
