Writing about risk management naturally leads to an issue you probably know well: It is easy to come off as the wet blanket, always thinking-and talking- about the risks in everything. While identifying and analyzing these risks keeps you-and this magazine-in business, that hardly comes from cynicism or self-interest. There simply are risks for everyone in everything.

In an interview for this month's cover story about hacking the electric grid, Robert Lee, CEO ofindustrial control systems cybersecurity firm Dragos, said, "This idea that there's noncritical infrastructure is kind of silly. It's all interconnected, so these events that threaten large swathes of our infrastructure are impactful to everyone, period. The trickle-down effect is increased risk to everyone, and we all need to appreciate the fact that our investments in infrastructure benefit everybody."

Although Lee was discussing cyberrisk, his words ring true about any kind of catastrophe. From personal loss to business interruption, disasters affect everyone. …
