Kadokawa Nets 'Butterfly' for Japan

KADOKAWA CORP. has picked up Japanese rights to "Butterfly Sleep," the Korean melodrama that screen this week in Busan's Gala Presentation section. The Japanese giant will give the film a platform release next year.

"The film will premiere in Japan on May 12, 2018. Since, however, even better theaters will be available from the week after, the official release date in Japan will be May 19," Lee Eun-kyoung, the film's producer told Variety. The tactic will also allow the film to hit theaters at the same time as in Korea.

"If the film opens in Korea before it does in Japan, the piracy issue will certainly rise, which will affect its Japanese release. [If a simultaneous release does not work] we might have to release the film in Japan first," said Lee.

While international sales are being handled by South Korea's M-Line Distribution, a theatrical distributor for Korea has yet to be decided. …
