INTERMEDIATE READERS: Book of Bones: 10 Record- Breaking Animals by Gabrielle Balkan, Illustrated by Sam Brewster; Phaidon, 2017; 48 pages; $19.95

Who has a jaw bone in which "three motorcycles could sit in a row?" Readers are asked to guess the identities of ten animals with extreme bones-the largest, heaviest, spikiest, smallest- through clues and images of their skeletons, white silhouettes against black backgrounds. Clues are intriguing in themselves, like how one animal sleeps standing up (the giraffe). Turn the page and full color prints show the animal in its environment, with the skeletons invisible but raised so they can be felt. The animals then expound on some of their interesting qualities; they can be fun, too. A visually elegant introduction to evolutionary specialization that's both playful and thought-provoking.
