Dear Reader,

Working in Catholic school education, I've witnessed a number of back-to-(CathoIic)-school days. I've seen the excitement from the educator side while working in a school and here at NCEA. This year, however, I got to look at it with new eyes: as a Catholic school parent.

My eldest daughter started pre-K in the Diocese of Arlington. For weeks prior, she was telling people she was going to "Church School" with an anxious excitement about what that would mean. On her second day of school, I picked her up and the first thing she said was, "Mommy, did you know that God made the whole world?" She told me she got to pray at school. She told me what she learned about Jesus and Mary. Injust two days, I was able to witness just what Catholic school education does: it forms the entire student not just in academics but in faith.

It's easy for me, someone whose job it is to help Catholic schools market and brand themselves, to make the case for Catholic school education. It's a little more difficult as a parent to realize the return on investment of Catholic school education before you enroll your child. That is why year-round marketing is so important to the work we do. Innovative open houses and shadow days, compelling websites and marketing materials, supportive parent and student ambassadors - these are all elements to the story we tell.
