'Justice League' to Approach $500M Worldwide by Sunday

DC tentpole needs to play well before arrival of Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Justice League has coasted past $200m heading into a second international session where it will be challenged by Disney/Pixar’s Mexican smash Coco in overlapping markets.

The DC Entertainment instalment stands at $204.2m and arrives in Japan this weekend. Warner Bros Pictures International executives are looking to Justice League to deliver strong holds, particularly in China.

The tentpole managed a $51.8m debut in the territory last weekend for the second biggest launch for a Warner Bros release behind Batman v Superman.

The UK, Mexico, South Korea, Russia, Australia and France will also be relied upon to add to the tally as Warner Bros seek to make hay before Star Wars: The Last Jedi shines as expected in its debut in two weeks.

Disney brass are playing a little coy with their projections for the sci-fi instalment, however a global debut could cross $500m. Chinese audiences will not get the film in the first wave, but neither were they part of the opening salvo of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which took $529m worldwide two years ago. …
