Florida: State Minimum Wage Rises in January

Starting Jan. 1, 2018, Florida's minimum wage is set to rise to $8.25 per hour, up from $8.10-an increase of approximately 2 percent, due to inflation. Employers can still pay workers less than the standard minimum wage if they are eligible for the tip credit under the Fair Labor Standards Act and if workers make up the difference in actual gratuities. However, businesses must still pay tipped workers a base wage-which will rise to $5.23 per hour.

California: Small Businesses to Provide Baby Bonding Leave

Small businesses in California will be required to provide 12 weeks of job-protected, unpaid baby bonding leave to employees within the first year following a child's birth, adoption or foster care placement. The new law, which is effective Jan. 1,2018, applies to private, state and municipal employers that directly employ 20 to 49 employees within 75 miles of each other. …
