Workplace Leave Policies Inadequate for Modern Workplace, Shrm Tells Congress

Federal policy on paid leave and workplace flexibility is behind the times, a SHRM representative testified before a subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives in December.

Speaking on behalf of SHRM, Angie Schaefer, vice president of human resources at Safety National in St. Louis, described the challenges that employers face in trying to comply with a patchwork of state and local laws and one-size-fits-all paid-sickleave mandates.

"This fragmented set of rules presents a compliance effort that is costly to my business," Schaefer told the Subcommittee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. "For example, we had to implement an entirely new payroll system to account for varying accrual and rollover rules."
