Time to Bring on 'Black Panther'!

I'm very excited to share our "Black Panther" cover package of stories with you in this week's issue. This is a film whose time has arrived.

As writer Ramin Setoodeh notes in his interview with director Ryan Coogler and star Chadwick Boseman, it has taken decades for a major Hollywood studio to bring a big-budget, full-fledged black superhero movie to the big screen.

But, the moment for such a film couldn't be better or more relevant. "'Black Panther' is a movie that doubles as a movement, or at least a moment that feels groundbreaking in the same way that last year's runaway hit 'Wonder Woman' inspired millions of women," writes Setoodeh.

Just as the media has shone the klieg lights on the inequities suffered by women, so has the industry been taken to task for giving short shrift to people of color in front of and behind the camera and in executive suites and talent agencies. The loud and super effective #OscarsSoWhite campaign, born out of the near absence of Oscar nominations for black actors and films with black characters in 2015 and 2016, went viral on social media and has given rise to the beginnings of change in a historically white-dominated business. …
