VA Opens Third Crisis Line Call Center

The VA is set to open its third Veterans Crisis Line call center in January. Located on the campus of the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System in Topeka, Kan., it will serve to handle the increase of calls to the Veterans Crisis Line as a result of VA's initiative to enable vets calling the VA's Community Based Outpatient Clinics and Vet Centers to "press 7."

The VFW has been the primary proponent of this initiative since the beginning. VFW and Auxiliary members Daniel and Pauline Duffy from Florida first recognized the need in 2013 for a "press 7" function. This allows vets to speak to a crisis line responder instead of having to hang up, call 1-800-2738255 and press 1 to get help.

"When it comes to preventing veteran suicide, we will do everything we can to make it as easy as possible for veterans to reach us," VA Secretary David Shulkin said. …
