VFW's 'Show of Force' Will Grab Attention of Lawmakers

Our annual "March on the Hill" is coming next month. This is VFW's chance to take our message directly to lawmakers. It is a special privilege granted to VFW as a congressionally chartered organization. We appreciate this opportunity and take it seriously.

Our appearance in Washington, D.C., during our Legislative Conference is a time when VFW has the undivided attention of lawmakers. Special interest groups lobby Congress every day on a variety of issues, so it is critical that we present a clear, strong and unified message on behalf of all veterans, service members and their families.

The centerpiece of that message is the VFW Commander-inChiefs address before a joint hearing of the Senate and House VA committees. This year, I will have that honor, and I will be backed by leaders from all of VFW's Departments along with many other VFW members.

This "show of force" is impressive and underscores the importance of our visit. The message I will deliver next month will focus on two main priorities: ending sequestration and improving health care for veterans, which includes access to private-sector doctors when VA care is not readily available.

Our members who attend the Legislative Conference also will take this message directly to the Capitol Hill offices of their local lawmakers. During these private meetings, VFW members will present the organization's Priority Goals (see p. 12).

Because all politics are local, our members will explain to the lawmakers how each goal relates to veterans in their communities. …
