...Wayne Ellwood visited Cuba and reported on the state of the country 40 years on from its revolution (nin. tl/Cuba1998). Cuba has always been a source of fascination for the New Internationalist. We have repeatedly focused on the country's remarkable record in health, pointing out that it has higher average life expectancy and lower infant mortality rates than the US despite being vastly poorer in economic terms than its giant neighbour. Its levels of equality have continued to set it apart, particularly since neoliberalism took hold across the West. But we always took care to acknowledge a 'but' in the shape of restrictions to expressing political opposition - and highlighted problems in the regime's attitude to LGBT rights in particular.

Wayne's visit came at a time when the country was still coping with the devastating impact of the Soviet Union's collapse. …
