Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) announced that Deirdre Brennan was recognized as an Illinois Library Luminary Honoree by the Illinois Library Association (ILA). Brennan is the executive director of RAILS. She started her career in Massachusetts, and while there, she worked to increase statewide library funding and to reorganize three public library systems into six multi-type systems. Later, when Brennan came to Illinois, she served as executive director of the Oak Park Public Library. She was also chair of the ILA's Public Policy Committee. Brennan initiated grants to help libraries join shared catalogs and for libraries of different types to collaborate on projects. She is the recipient of the 2016 Hugh C. Atkinson award for her resourcesharing efforts.

The Freedom to Read Foundation awarded Judith Krug Fund Banned Books Week Event Grants. These grants are available to nonprofit organizations to support activities that raise awareness of intellectual freedom and censorship issues. Grants are awarded at two levels: $1,000 and $2,500.
