We are entering the very best time of the year at our schools and teacher education programs. It is the time when enthusiastic young students race in to reminisce about their summer and renew friendships, and teachers and staff realize the incredible gift and opportunity we have to influence children and our school communities. You can feel the excitement in the air!

Some of the newest students arrive at school with anxiety and uncertainty on their faces. This whole new world is ready to unfold for them, and they question what it will be like to leave their safe havens. Often, we see the same anxiety on the faces of their parents. By the end of the year, we will have built trusting and positive relationships with them. Returning students eagerly await new challenges and insights that they will encounter in their quest for new understandings of work-work their teacher has created "especially for them."

Teachers who have just completed their coursework over the summer step into their classrooms with anticipation and a touch of hesitation- knowing they have a firm grasp on content but wondering what it looks like when you add children to the mix. For veteran teachers, excitement mounts as they welcome new students, with the anticipation of a shared partnership as they journey through the year together.

Administrators hope that the decisions made last spring will serve their schools well, ensuring the right number of students at the appropriate levels and with the best teachers. It sometimes feels like magic is happening. …
