WILL YOU DESCRIBE YOUR INTRODUCTION TO MONTESSORI EDUCATION?

After I received my bachelor's degree in human services from Hawai'i Pacific University, I wanted to continue my education in Montessori. My first introduction to a formal Montessori education was at Chaminade University of Honolulu. I studied to earn Montessori certification at the Early Childhood level while also working toward a master's degree in education. I returned to my home on Maui before receiving my credential; however, my experience at Chaminade was rewarding and made me realize that I would eventually want to complete my AMS credential and return to teaching in a Montessori environment.

WHAT IS YOUR MONTESSORI CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE?

My classroom experience is varied. While attending college, I worked at Kawaiaha'o Church Preschool, on Oahu, as an assistant Primary teacher. I developed great appreciation for the Montessori philosophy while I was there. After studying at Chaminade, I worked at Montessori Hale O Keiki (MHOK), in Kihei, as an assistant teacher for fourth through eighth grade; I also served as a temporary lead teacher for Upper Elementary and worked in Montessori summer camps for Primary students. My responsibilities included creating e-portfolios for students in Upper School; being a part of our snorkeling and dive curriculum with our Montessori students; and teaching art to all age levels. I was the Montessori Primary licensing director for 2 years, and, for the past 2 years, I have been working in the Primary classroom.

My love of underwater photography was born through spending time in the beautiful oceans of Maui, and I have furthered my expertise over the years working at MHOK: I take underwater photos during our school's once-a-month snorkel and dive field trips. …
