The first time I saw Martha Nichols was at New York City Dance Alliance Nationals a few years ago. I sat directly behind her place at the judges' table and could see and enjoy her excitement and connection with the dancers as they appeared onstage. Clearly, she was an emotional advocate for their success, whether or not they landed a title. I've been curious about her ever since, so I was delighted when Nichols herself won a competition: first place in the A.C.E. Awards at our Dance Teacher Summit. Not only did her choreography stand out as refreshingly upbeat, her performers were clad in neon yellow jazz pants that shouted: "Look at me! I'm different!"

Turns out that difference is a consistent thread in her life. (See "Breaking the Mold," page 38.) We predict big things for Nichols as she takes her exciting work to the concert stage. Keep an eye out!
